Christine Bosmann’s comment about the therapeutic relationship has some validity but I am uncertain if she is agreeing or disagreeing with me, either is fine, but clarity would be helpful. The relationship definitely has a bearing on the level of work undertaken and the outcome of same. However, modalities do they make a difference? Well I guess that depennds on the way you practice, your belief system should you have one and how creative and experienced you are. I have studied many different theories and I do not believe that one size fits all. Everyone is unique, their personal histories have shaped them into the person they are now and to force anyone down a predefined pathway would be foolhardy and extremely arrogant.
Therapy is a journey, discovering or bringing into focus many things on the way; accompanied by the right therapist I agree is more important than the modality. For most clients the type of therapy and range of styles is not usually what is being sought. Unless this is important for you and you have done your homework, arm yourself with whatever questions you want to ask, write them down before you pick up the phone and use your instinct as to whether you like the therapist. Remember we do not necessarily know best, its your money and your time, choose wisely.
